Austin Fierstadt (AS Wireless)
Interview: Eric (Screenbuyer.com) and Austin Fierstadt (AS Wireless)
Eric: Austin, can you walk me through the origins of AS Wireless? How did you get started in this industry?
Austin: It’s been quite a journey. We began 25 years ago as a small ATT store in Hicksville, New York. Back then, it was just a local retail operation. But I quickly realized there was a massive opportunity in device repair and refurbishment. The mobile technology landscape was changing rapidly, and we needed to adapt.
Eric: What prompted the transition from a retail store to a repair-focused business?
Austin: Around 10 years into our business, we noticed customers were struggling with expensive device repairs. Smartphones and tablets were becoming more complex, and replacement costs were skyrocketing. We saw a gap in the market – people needed affordable, high-quality repair services.
Eric: Tell me more about your specialization in LCD refurbishing. How did you develop that expertise?
Austin: LCD reg glassing was our breakthrough. Initially, it was incredibly challenging. We lost significant money – probably close to $100,000 in our first two years of attempting this service. We broke countless screens, had frustrated customers, and nearly gave up multiple times. But we were determined to master the technique.
Eric: What made you persist through those difficult early years?
Austin: Passion and commitment. Our team believed we could become the best. We invested in training, studied screen technologies, and developed proprietary techniques. Now, we’re considered industry leaders in LCD refurbishing. What was once our biggest challenge is now our primary competitive advantage.
Eric: How do you balance business-to-business services with walk-in repairs?
Austin: It’s a delicate ecosystem. Our B2B clients include local businesses, schools, and corporate clients who need bulk device repairs. Simultaneously, we maintain a strong walk-in service for individual customers. Our Hicksville location has become a go-to repair destination in Nassau County.
Eric: What geographic area do you primarily serve?
Austin: We’re deeply rooted in Hicksville, but our reputation extends throughout Nassau County. We get customers from Bethpage, Jericho, Plainview, and surrounding areas. Word-of-mouth has been our most powerful marketing tool.
Eric: Looking ahead, what challenges do you anticipate in the device repair industry?
Austin: Technology is evolving at an unprecedented rate. LCD screens are becoming more sophisticated, with newer materials and more complex designs. Additionally, new repair businesses are constantly emerging. Our advantage is experience – we’ve weathered multiple technological shifts over 25 years.
Eric: How do you stay competitive in such a dynamic market?
Austin: Continuous learning and adaptation. We invest heavily in training, stay updated on the latest repair technologies, and maintain a passionate, skilled team. Our longevity isn’t just about survival; it’s about consistently delivering exceptional service.
Eric: Any advice for entrepreneurs entering the device repair industry?
Austin: Be patient, persistent, and willing to learn. This industry isn’t about quick wins but building expertise and trust. Invest in your skills, understand the technology, and always prioritize customer satisfaction.
